What age is best to start lessons?

The Reineking Flute Studio has had students range from age 7 to in their 70s-- it's never too late to start or return to flute lessons! However, the earlier a student begins lessons, the more time they can spend building good habits on their instrument. Most beginners in the Montana school system start on flute between the ages of 10-12 years old in their school music program, however, students of all ages and experience levels are welcome!

Do students need to purchase their own flute or piccolo? 

Students do not need to own an instrument right away-- renting is a fantastic way to start. However, students DO need an instrument in proper playing condition (has had a professional Clean-Oil-Adjust OR has been rented/purchased within the past year). Students younger than 11 years old will typically need to start on a curved headjoint to avoid injury and encourage proper hand position for their best success. 

 

What do I need to bring to lessons?
Your instruments in proper playing condition, a binder for sheet music, notebook specifically for lesson notes and assignments, and a growth mindset. 

How much daily practice is expected?
Practice time expectations are specific to each student and dependent on their musical goals, age, and experience. Appropriate practice time can range from 20 mins a day (beginners) to over 2 hours daily (students wanting to major in music). 

 

How often are lessons held? 

After completing the registration process, students are assigned a weekly lesson slot that repeats for the remainder of the current term (Sep-Dec, Jan-May, Jun-Aug). The studio offers rescheduling as needed, but does not offer every-other-week scheduling or discounts for missed lessons at this time. Single lessons are occasionally available by appointment, pending on scheduling. 

Are online lessons available?
Yes, virtual lessons are offered for students who live outside Billings, as an option for weather/transportation emergencies, if anyone is recovering from illness, and/or has mobility concerns. 

Am I required to perform in studio recitals? 
Yes, all students are encouraged to participate in studio recitals in some capacity (solos, duets with Lauren, etc.)
